Harry Potter: 3 Things We Loved About the New Series Trailer

The new teaser for HBO’s Harry Potter series only takes a few minutes to make Hogwarts feel familiar again. There’s the Sorting Hat, Quidditch, the Mirror of Erised, the troll, Fluffy and all those other moments fans have seen before, but there’s also something slightly different about the way this version is putting them together. With the series arriving around Christmas 2026, this is probably our clearest look yet at what HBO is actually trying to do with the adaptation. And thankfully, it doesn’t look like the plan is simply to take the old movies, change the actors and shoot everything again.

Some déjà vu was always going to happen. The original films have been around for nearly 25 years, so certain images are basically burned into people’s memories at this point. Seeing a new Harry walk into Hogwarts, watching the Sorting Ceremony again or getting another look at wizard’s chess is naturally going to remind people of the movies, whether HBO wants that or not. But the new trailer also gives us a few reasons to be genuinely curious about this version, especially when it comes to the parts of Hogwarts that the movies never had enough time to explore.

Hogwarts Finally Feels Like a Place People Actually Live In

This was probably the best thing about the trailer. There are a lot of little moments that don’t necessarily matter to the main story, but they make Hogwarts feel much bigger and more believable. We see glimpses of Harry’s class schedule, students sitting through Transfiguration and Herbology, life inside the dormitories, packed Quidditch stands and other ordinary school moments that a two-hour movie simply didn’t have much room for. None of these scenes are huge on their own, but together they give the impression that Hogwarts is supposed to be an actual school where kids spend most of their year, rather than just a backdrop that appears whenever the plot needs it.

That’s where the television format could really help this story. The Sorcerer’s Stone plot is obviously still there, but the series has the luxury of slowing down and spending time with Harry as an eleven-year-old who has suddenly discovered that this completely strange world is real. Even before he gets to Hogwarts, the trailer seems interested in giving the characters more room. We get more of the Weasley family, including Ron receiving his letter at the Burrow, for example. These are moments that might have been little more than a sentence or two in the book or something that the movies had to rush past, but a series can actually stop and live in those scenes for a while. That could make a surprisingly big difference.

The New Harry, Ron and Hermione Already Have Their Own Feel

Obviously, the new trio was always going to be one of the biggest talking points. Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout have the unenviable job of playing Harry, Hermione and Ron after Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint spent more than a decade making those roles their own. There’s no way around the comparisons, and fans are going to make them whether the young actors imitate the original trio or not. What’s encouraging here is that they don’t seem to be trying too hard to copy what came before.

It’s still way too early to judge how good the performances will actually be, but there are already some interesting differences in the way the three characters come across. Hermione seems a little more reserved and unsure of herself before she becomes close with Harry and Ron, while Ron has a much more openly comic and expressive presence. Harry, meanwhile, seems to have that wide-eyed feeling of a kid who has just walked into a world he never knew existed. Most importantly, none of them immediately feels like a younger version of the actors from the films. That may sound like a small thing, but for a reboot carrying this much baggage, it’s probably exactly what you want.

It Doesn’t Look Like HBO Is Trying to Recreate the Movies

This might be the most important part of the trailer. There would be very little point in making a new Harry Potter series if the entire idea was just to recreate the 2001 movie shot for shot with different actors. Some similarities are unavoidable, of course. The story is still based on the same book, and certain scenes are so well known that any adaptation is going to trigger memories of Chris Columbus’s film. But the overall look and feel of this series seem to be heading somewhere else.

The cinematography has its own character, the pacing feels less tied to the rhythm of a feature film, and there’s much more attention being given to everyday life at school. Even the music seems to be making an effort not to lean too heavily on the enormous shadow of John Williams’ original score. That doesn’t mean the new approach is automatically better, and it would be silly to judge it that way from one trailer. It just feels different, which is actually a good thing.

After nearly a quarter of a century, another Harry Potter adaptation doesn’t really need to convince anyone that the story is good. We already know it is. What HBO needs to prove is that there’s a reason to tell it again, and this trailer gives us a pretty decent answer: the series can slow down, spend more time on the books’ smaller moments, restore things that had to be cut from the movies and let the characters exist outside the biggest plot points. The nostalgia is obviously going to be there, and nobody is going to watch Harry walk into Hogwarts without thinking about the original films. But if HBO can build something that eventually feels like its own Harry Potter rather than a replacement copy of the movies, then this return to Hogwarts could actually be worth getting excited about.
