Get Ready for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Season 2 Will Bring a Completely Different Tone

Peter Claffey has teased major shifts for the next chapter of the series, which will thrust Dunk into an entirely new kind of conflict.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is officially returning for a second season, but the upcoming adventures of Dunk and Egg are shaping up to have a very different vibe. The new episodes will continue the journey of Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and the young Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell), steering the duo into a notably more melancholic story. Season two adapts The Sworn Sword, the second novella in George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series. While the debut season stood out for its lighter, more playful atmosphere compared to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, this next chapter will align much more closely with the heavy, dramatic tone typical of the broader Westeros universe.

Peter Claffey himself confirmed the shift. In an interview with TV Insider, the actor revealed that the second season will feature “much more sadness,” bringing an entirely fresh challenge for Dunk. Interestingly, this tonal shift won’t stem from grander scales or more powerful characters. On the contrary, Claffey explained that Dunk will interact with figures far below the status of the royal Targaryens or the elites of King’s Landing. The knight-errant will also try his hand at diplomacy, quickly realizing how tricky it is to settle disputes with words alone. Even so, the character’s trademark humor isn’t going anywhere; Claffey noted that Dunk remains just as awkward when talking to women, stumbling through romantic interactions all over again.

The first season concluded with Egg hitting the road across Westeros with Ser Duncan following the tragic aftermath of the Trial of the Seven. The young prince had claimed his father, Prince Maekar, changed his mind, when he had actually run away without Dunk knowing. In season 2, the pair get tangled in a bitter land dispute between Ser Eustace Osgrey (Peter Mullan) and his neighbor Lady Rohanne Webber (Lucy Boynton). This conflict brings in a wave of fresh faces, meaning the cast will be almost entirely overhauled outside of the two leads.

Director Owen Harris previously hinted at this atmospheric pivot as well. According to the filmmaker, the tone of the new episodes ties directly into the setting, pushing Dunk and Egg to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their bond. Harris even described the second season as practically the inverse of the first. Filming for season two wrapped up in August, though not without hurdles. Severe summer storms and flooding in Spain caused production delays, forcing the crew to relocate to Gran Canaria. Despite these setbacks, showrunner Ira Parker expressed confidence that they remain on track.

Following a stellar first season that pulled in nine Emmy nominations—including Outstanding Drama Series—anticipation for the return of Dunk and Egg is sky-high. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is slated to premiere in the spring of 2027.
