Spoiler warning: This recap contains major plot details from Episode 5 of Reacher Season 4, “Bridge.”
Episode 5 finally starts pulling some of the threads together, although doing so only seems to create three more problems for every answer Reacher gets. Anna Merrick’s death turns out to be tied to a much bigger scheme involving her missing son, a stolen government file and two women who have been pretending to be far more helpless than they really are. Before long, Reacher is being hunted by the police, Jacob is making increasingly questionable decisions and Lila and Amisha have gone from suspicious background characters to the people everyone should probably be worried about.
So What Really Happened to Anna?
Reacher eventually works out that Anna was forced into stealing and delivering a government file because her son Ben had been kidnapped. She was trying to get him back, but by the time she realized what was really happening, Ben was already dead. Anna then took her own life, and the awful irony is that Reacher’s earlier actions had accidentally made it harder for her to get any kind of revenge or rescue.
The discovery of Ben’s body gives Reacher another important clue. He was killed with a karambit, the curved Indonesian blade that has already shown up more than once, and Lila and Amisha happen to be carrying identical knives. That’s not exactly the sort of coincidence Reacher likes to ignore.
Reacher Goes to Rescue the Hoths and Walks Into a Trap
Reacher heads to the hotel expecting to find Lila and Amisha in serious danger from four attackers. Instead, he arrives after the real fight is already over. The women have killed the men themselves, and they’ve done it efficiently enough to make it very clear that the frightened-victim routine was mostly an act.
Reacher doesn’t get much time to process that before the police show up and, because his luck is apparently terrible, he gets blamed for the bodies. He escapes through a garbage chute, which is not exactly the glamorous side of being Jack Reacher, and then gets in touch with Tamara. She notices that the same kind of karambit was used in the deaths of Ben and Mary Ellen, giving them another disturbing connection.
The theory that starts forming is even worse. Lila and Amisha may have used Mary Ellen, an OnlyFans model, to get close to Ben before killing her and taking him. So the women aren’t simply connected to the conspiracy; they may have been actively building pieces of it themselves.
Reacher Keeps Getting One Step Behind
Reacher suspects Anna sent the missing thumb drive to Jacob, but before he can follow up properly, the police catch him again. They hit him with a vehicle and take him into custody, which is about as subtle as Reacher’s problems have been all season.
Meanwhile, Russell uncovers something else about Lila. She used a platinum credit card to help a man named Tomas Waberi enter the country, adding another name to a list that is becoming increasingly difficult to keep straight. At this point, every new clue seems to come with its own side quest.
Jacob and the others then find Anna’s thumb drive and phone in his mailbox. They barely have time to look at either one before Lila and Amisha attack, leading to a chase that ends on a bridge. When the authorities finally close in, the women jump over the side and disappear, which is a fairly dramatic way to end an escape.
Reacher’s Jail Break Gets Very Reacher-Like
While Reacher is back in custody, Detective Shaun Docherty, Tamara’s partner, visits him and starts pushing for answers about his involvement with her. The conversation gets considerably worse when a man claiming to be “Officer Baker” arrives and says he’s connected to the CIA.
He is not there to have a friendly chat.
Reacher fights him through the bars, manages to overpower him and tears off his ear during the struggle. He grabs the keys and gets out, because apparently even jail isn’t going to keep him occupied for very long. It’s a ridiculous bit of violence, but also exactly the kind of thing Reacher tends to do when subtle options run out.
Jacob Stops Playing by the Rules
Jacob goes looking for help from his uncle, Monty DeRosa, a lieutenant with the Mayfield Police Department. Monty sticks rigidly to procedure and isn’t interested in bending the rules for Jacob, which leaves Jacob feeling like the local police simply aren’t equipped for the mess they’ve stumbled into.
Instead of calling in the federal authorities, Jacob decides to take matters into his own hands. He commandeers a police car and goes looking for Reacher and the others, which probably isn’t the sort of thing his uncle had in mind when he talked about procedure.
Once the group is back together, they finally get a chance to examine Anna’s thumb drive properly. And the big reveal is… one photograph.
That’s it.
The file contains a 25-year-old picture taken in Indonesia. It shows Sampson, Cahill and General Putra, the man responsible for a mass murder, standing alongside an unidentified scientist. Considering how many people have already been killed while chasing this information, the photograph suddenly becomes a very important piece of paper—or, more accurately, a very important digital file.
The obvious question is why.
Why does this one old photograph matter enough for mercenaries, federal agents, CIA operatives and Lila to kill over it? Whatever the answer is, it clearly reaches back much further than the current conspiracy.
Anna’s Phone Is Even Worse
The phone gives them something the drive doesn’t: a much clearer picture of what Anna was being forced to do. Her final messages include direct instructions from Lila telling her where to go, along with threats against Ben if she contacted the authorities or disobeyed.
Then they find the video.
It shows Lila and Amisha torturing Mary Ellen while Ben is forced to watch. For Jacob, that changes the situation completely. Whatever questions he had about who was responsible for Ben’s death are suddenly a lot easier to answer, and whatever patience he had left seems to disappear with them.
The Old Photo Finally Gets a Name
Reacher contacts Sampson and asks him about the fourth person standing in the photograph. Sampson remembers that the man was a scientist who had once worked on malaria research, but after 25 years, he can’t remember his name.
Which is unfortunate, because everybody would really like that name.
Before they can investigate further, the police arrive at their hotel. Tamara tries to fake an arrest of Reacher so the group can buy some time, but a suspicious hotel employee notices something isn’t right and exposes the setup. The next chase starts almost immediately.
It ends with Reacher protecting Tamara as the two of them crash through a glass roof. It’s another one of those Reacher moments where the plan goes wrong so spectacularly that the only option left is to jump and hope the landing isn’t fatal.
Lila Has Jacob Now
Eventually, Reacher and the others trace the trail back to the abandoned Philadelphia restaurant where Ben was held. When they get there, Lila is already waiting.
And she’s not alone.
She is calmly handling her karambit, while Jacob is being held hostage. The woman who spent earlier episodes looking like someone Reacher needed to protect is now sitting in the middle of the operation, completely in control of the situation.
That’s where Episode 5 leaves things.
The power balance has changed pretty dramatically. Lila and Amisha are no longer suspicious side characters hovering around the mystery; they are now clearly among the main threats. Reacher has been caught off guard more than once, although he keeps finding ways out, and that 25-year-old photograph has become the central piece of a conspiracy that seems to reach back decades.
Jacob is in Lila’s hands, the missing information is still drawing multiple groups toward the same target, and Reacher still doesn’t know why that old photograph matters so much. Whatever comes next, the show has moved well beyond a simple murder investigation. This is now a much bigger game, and Reacher may finally be realizing that he’s been reacting to it instead of controlling it.
